Happy Countdown to Yellowstone 2018 from Outdoors Connected

Posted by Outdoors Connected Staff Member on Jan 17th 2018

Okay, 2017 is over - let the 2018 Yellowstone summer season countdown begin! This year the opening date of the Park is April 20th.

On the weekend Yellowstone opens, we often christen the season with what we call our combo trip to Yellowstone. It begins with a drive to the North Entrance (open year round) on April 19th for one last winter trip before the opening of the summer season. We enter the park through Mammoth/Gardiner and spend the day enjoying the northern part of the park between Mammoth and the east end of Larmar Valley. We will probably spend the night in Gardiner. The next day, the opening day of the summer season, we explore the area between Mammoth and Old Faithful enjoying scenery we have not seen since the end of last year’s summer season.

In anticipation of the summer season’s inaugural trip, and the sequential opening of various roads in Yellowstone, we hope you will find these maps useful.

Open all year round

The road from Gardiner, Mt to Mammoth Hot Springs and on to Silver Gate and Cooke City, MT is open year round. Enjoy the terraced geothermal features of Mammoth Hot Springs and the wildlife of Lamar Valley, the so call Serengeti of North America. Here you are sure to see bison, elk, big horn sheep, and wolves. And, as the winter months give way to spring look for grizzly bear emerging from their hibernation.
